Professional Experience

1.  CHL Ltd ( Holding company of  The Suryaa New Delhi): (March 2001 till date)

Designation: Corporate Director (Administration and Controls) With effect from November 2014

Previous designations at CHL Ltd :

·         Corporate Manager (Administration and Controls) with effect from March 2003 till October   2014,

·         Manager Development with effect from March 2001 till March 2003.

Key responsibilities include:
·         
     Marketing and negotiating long-term relationships for business centre spaces in the hotel among various top ranking multinational organizations, through the value proposition of An Ideal Working Environment in the Capital City of India,

·         Key relationship manager for the organizations currently operating out of the said business centre spaces in The Suryaa New Delhi, as well as for the license holders of shopping arcade located in the hotel,

·         Assisting the Corporate Office as and when required,  

·     Assisting the operations team headed by the General Manager, as and when required, through suggestions, hands-on support, coordination with the corporate office etc, with regard to certain approvals, decisions etc.

 Major accomplishments include:

·         Successfully negotiated long-term business relationships on mutually beneficial terms with some of the leading MNCs such as Abbott Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Hewlett-Packard, BMC Software, Federal Express, SAP India, Cadence Design Systems, etc.

This has enabled a stable and significant revenue stream for the hotel over the years.

·          Ensured long term business relationships with the above through personal as well as team efforts and controls in ensuring satisfactory services to such important guests,

·          Worked out a strategy for ensuring a seamless transition of brand change from Crowne Plaza Delhi to The Suryaa New Delhi. Submitted the same to the senior management for their perusal,

·         Put in place acceptable procedures for effecting scrap disposal in the organization,
    
·         Audited the functioning of the Sales Department to identify key gaps, and submitted a Gap Analysis Report to the senior management for their perusal and necessary action,

·         Worked out suitable policy and procedures in consultation with other colleagues for booker loyalty programme, and submitted periodic MIS to the sales departments to enable them review the performance of some key bookers,

·         Voluntarily undertook special duties beyond normal working hours till midnight as Manager on Duty. This involves overall supervision of the hotel operations during those hours, and interacting with colleagues on duty and guests to elicit their feed backs and identify operational gaps (if any), vis-a-vis their respective expectations from the organization. Submitted formal reports to the operations team highlighting key feed backs along with suggested recommendations. Some of the said recommendations were implemented subsequently,    

·         Conducted an audit with regard to the usage of guest loyalty card in our F&B outlets, and made certain recommendations to the senior management,

·         Worked out Standard Operating Procedures in consultation with other colleagues with regard to the grant of credit facilities to some of our client organizations, follow ups and recovery of outstanding dues. This enabled reductions of the outstanding by 60%, while speeding up cash flows on account of reduction in time taken to realize payments from clients,

·         ,Introduced the concept of spot audits of systems with special focus on updated information, inter departmental interactions and coordination. This reduced the disputes with clients on account of errors in billing which in turn facilitated savings in paperwork and man hours  spent in rectifying those errors.

·         Conducted a feasibility study on the residential apartments in the city of Dushanbe, Capital of Republic of Tajikistan, and presented recommendations to the senior management highlighting the right strategy to be adopted,

·         Officiated as Head of Human Resources Department for a brief period of two months. Fine tuned procedures involving recruitments, and successfully counseled some staff members  with regards to their overall attitude towards work, and

·         Designed and implemented Standard Operating Procedures post consultation with other colleagues with regard to the functions of the purchase, stores, and receiving departments.      

2.   Ultima Leasing and Financing which is a sister concern of CHL Ltd (March 2000 to Feb 2001)

3. HSBC – (November 1996 to November 1999)

Designation - Credit Card Officer

Job responsibilities included:

·         Identification , price negotiation , and enrollment of profitable merchant establishments,

·         Merchant training with regard to Card acceptance procedures and terminal usage,

·       Merchant servicing which include payment reconciliations , terminal related problems, courier visitations etc,

·          Backup for Corporate Card Sales which included,  negotiation of pricing structure with corporates for bulk card sales, follow ups on card issuance for approved applications, over dues from corporates etc

Major accomplishments had been in terms of substantial qualitative and quantitative increase in the merchant base which contributed immensely towards an overall of fourfold increase in the profitable business volume within two and a half years from the date of my joining.

Given the highly competitive nature of this business, the key differentiating factors ensuring this exponential growth were, customer service and effective relationship management with the merchant establishments.

4.  American Express T.R.S. (May 1990 – November 1996)

Designation – Assistant Executive (a position in the managerial cadre)

Job responsibilities included (May 1993 till Nov 1996)

·          Monitoring and controlling the receivables and suspense accounts relating to Travelers Cheque sales for all relevant selling outlets in India and Area countries,

·        Coordinating the various activities relating to the same with the colleagues in India and Area countries as well as at the headquarters in the US,

·         Personal follow-ups with some of the defaulting sellers in India and Area countries,

·         Financial appraisals of  requests from corporates to stock and sell American Express Travelers Cheques etc

Job responsibilities included (May 1990 till March 1993)

·         Monitoring the receipt and profitability parameters relating to the settlements against the sales of American Express Travellers Cheques from all the selling outlets/banks in India and Area countries.

Major achievements at American Express TRS included :
                                                                                        
·         Was part of an international team responsible for a successful pilot project conducted by American Express in its Indian market. This involved decentralization of settlement processing from the headquarters in the US,

·    Designed and implemented PC based packages to enable better control over receivables and for generating MIS on settlement related issues. While the receivables dropped by over 60%, timely generation of the MIS enabled presentation of a true picture of sales and profitability trends of Travelers Cheque sales to other colleagues in the organization. Other MIS enabled the international divisions of leading banks reconcile their Nostro accounts on a timely basis,

·         Successfully sold the concept of optimum settlement methodologies like Debit Authority and telex transfer of funds to some of the major selling outlets previously effecting settlements through drafts. This was accomplished through self drafted mailers only,

·      Independently carried out various analysis to explore the possibilities of further reducing the delays in receipt of settlements, and shared the same with colleagues concerned. Some of the recommendations were put in practice.
   

5.  United Database (India) Pvt. Ltd  (November 1989 – April 1990)

Job Responsibility included – promoting the concept of  advertising in the yellow pages to a cross section of client base.

 Job Responsibility included - marketing solutions involving  mechanization of  printing static/semi static data of repetitive nature.

 Applications included – automation of payroll and other allied documents, mailing lists, hospital records, cheque personalisation and other banking records.
                                                                             
Segments handled – Government departments and agencies, defence establishments, banks and hospitals.

Awards and Recognition

·         Nominated for a pleasure trip to Italy in 1996, while in American Express TRS,

·         Decorated with Regional (Japan, Pacific, Asia) Great Performers Award in American Express TRS in 1994, for going beyond even their high professional standards of performance, in rendering service to an American Express customer,

·         Given Certificate of Appreciation by the then Country Manager of  American Express TRS in 1993, for establishing Electronic Sales Settlement methodology in various company locations ,

·         Nominated as the Sales Executive of the month at Bradma of India limited, for achieving 240% of the monthly sales target, all of which was in the form of new business to the company.

·     What they don’t teach in a B- School. which dwelt upon various critical aspects which a business school graduate needs to focus on to succeed in the corporate world. This article was published in August 2003 issue of  The Strategist (supplement of Business Standard).


·        No Magic Wand (relating to implementation of ERP systems). This was published in an October 2002 issue of The Strategist
